Here's the deal: "FIGHTING THE FRESHMAN FIFTEEN: How to Lose Weight in College - or Better Yet, Never Put It On:" science has demonstrated that students can put on weight - up to fifteen pounds, if they're not aware - once they start college.

Dr. David Levitsky at Cornell did the study (listed on p. 5 of the book) that shows how students who participated in his study gained one-half pound per week on average, which over the course of a school year added up to, yup you guessed it: fifteen extra pounds.

Written in a light, breezy style, "FIGHTING THE FRESHMAN FIFTEEN" should take students no more than a couple hours to read. The format makes it easy to reference segments even after one has finished reading them. The book is divided into three sections that work in sequence to teach students how to stay in shape (or get in shape at school) - all while juggling classes, work and a social life.

The First section outlines the causes of the freshman fifteen and includes a placement test so readers can determine where to start (whether Level 101, 201, 301, or 401) in the workout plans segment.

The Second section is concerned with the major "pitfalls" of the college lifestyle such as buffet lines, lack of time or motivation to workout and eating disorders - all of which can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. Caitlin outlines the most common issues and then offers simple realistic tips for how students can overcome these pitfalls.

The Third section includes workout plans that can be done with or without the use of a gym. The plans are divided into four groups (101 to 401) and use the placement test in Section One to determine where the reader should start, as a way of personalizing the book for themselves. The plans are each 12 weeks, include strength training and can be worked through in sequence from the first to the fourth plan. College life is busy so the plans are designed to help students get the best results in the shortest amount of time.

The Third section also includes an exercise Q&A, plus tips of strength training and getting the most out of your time at the gym.

This book teaches college students (and soon to be college students) that they are in control of their own health and bodies and that they can be the secret to their own success. This is done so through lessons of self awareness and accountability all in a fun, easy to read book that sounds more like a conversation with your friend than a lecture from your professor.
